Class Act Student: Kyle Hupman Grade: Senior Family: Kyle is the son of Gary and Cathy Hupman of Windsor. He is a 15-year-old senior. He has made about 60 short films, working with friends much of the time. He writes the films, along with friends, and edits them. One of his films, "War of the Ringtones," won first place in the best special effects category in the annual Rod Serling Video Festival. He is planning to go to film school after high school graduation. When did you start making movies? I started using my family's video camera in the third grade and then stopped for a while. In eighth grade, I was assigned a video project and found I liked doing the filming and editing. What attracts you to filmmaking? I like it because you can tell a story and also have an awful lot of fun making them. Being able to tell a story and make something entertaining for people to watch. What is the toughest part of making movies? Sometimes, you have a really great idea and can't do it with the limited equipment you have. What are your favorite type of films? I like science fiction and action films -- films with special effects. Do you have a favorite director? Steven Spielberg: He has some really good ideas. What do you think was your best film? My number one is "War of the Ringtones." My two friends go out and stand in the playground, and then start comparing ringtones on their cell phones. After that, they start acting out the ringtones. They do more elaborate ringtones, and then I put in special effects. Do you have a favorite band? Red Hot Chili Peppers. What is one thing you would change about high school? I would make it start a little later in the day. I'm not a morning person. What trait do you dislike most in people? When they talk behind other people's backs. What is your favorite food? Mashed potatoes, especially with gravy put all over them. Do you participate in any other activities? I do karate. I'm a high brown belt and will be testing for my black belt in mid-December or early next year.
